BTSA as an Appropriate Body

From September 2019, Bury Teaching Schools Alliance (BTSA) will become an Appropriate Body (alongside Bury LA for the first term) for the Professional Induction of Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs). Schools and academies can buy into this rigorous and high-quality Appropriate Body service for £270 per year which includes:

  • Statutory functions

  • Online support, resources and assessment

  • Induction tutor training and networking

  • Face to face support

    Our service is built around the three main responsibilities of administration, quality assurance and supporting and monitoring, and aims to support NQTs in developing the skills to be effective practitioners whilst also monitoring their progress against Teacher Standards.


High quality on and offline guidance, support, resources and training for Induction tutors and mentors to ensure you meet all of your statutory requirements. Paperless online assessment management system.

The core NQT package will include:

  • Registering and monitoring the progress of NQTs and reporting to the Teacher Regulation Agency

  • Providing advice and guidance on setting up a whole school NQT programme

  • Delivering a training session to Induction Tutors and mentors of NQTs

  • Delivering a session to NQTs re the Induction process and Appropriate Body role

  • Provide phone/email support for Induction Tutors, mentors and Heads

  • Make decisions on the outcome of statutory induction for NQTs in liaison with the Head and notify Teacher Regulation Agency

  • Provide advice and guidance where NQTs are at risk of failure and advise on appropriate support packages for the NQT

  • Quality assurance of termly and final assessment forms against the Teachers' Standards

  • Monitor the progress of the NQT including a paired observation visit if requested by the school

  • Provide an electronic NQT handbook

Opportunity to 'opt in' to our comprehensive CPD programme (details available separately)

As the Appropriate Body (AB) Bury Teaching Schools Alliance will:

  • Deliver its statutory duties as the AB

  • Register NQTs with the AB and the Teaching Regulation Agency and inform the school if the NQT has not been registered correctly

  • Read/review and quality assure assessment reports every term

  • Carry out quality assurance visits and document sampling with at least 10% of schools and academies who are registered with us

  • Liaise with schools and provide relevant information and advice on NQT induction procedures, statutory guidance and NQTs causing concern.

  • Maintain records and assessment reports online

  • Host an information and networking event for all NQTs in the autumn term ‘the welcome event’ for all NQTs in Bury schools.

The Appropriate Body has the main quality assurance role in the NQT induction process and decides if an NQT meets the Standards to pass the induction period.

Appropriate Body Costings

The cost for 2020-21 will be £270 per NQT for up to 2 NQTs per school, and £100 per additional NQT thereafter.
