Ian Young

Director BTSA, NLE, CEO Christ Church MAT

Director of The Bury Teaching Schools Alliance, Ian Young,  is highly experienced in leadership and management having a breadth of experiences ranging from sixteen years primary headship, working for CfBT as an additional inspector and working as a National Leader of Education engaged in school to school support work for several years.

His recent work as a National Leader of Education has led to him working in a range of school contexts to coach, challenge and support leadership teams and governors. As a result, stronger management systems have been developed and embedded and governors’ challenge has been improved. Ian has good credibility amongst schools and local authority colleagues because of his enthusiasm, experiences in the primary phase and impact on outcomes.

 
 

Elaine Parkinson

Elaine Parkinson

Assistant Director BTSA, NLE, Chief Executive Officer and Accounting Officer Oak Learning Partnership

Elaine Parkinson is a National Leader of Education and Headteacher of Elms Bank, a secondary generic special school (11-19) in Bury. She began her career as an English teacher at Moorclose Senior High School in 1986 (now Middleton Technology College). She moved into special education in 1990. She has held a range of posts in special schools before becoming Headteacher of Elms Bank Specialist Arts College in 2007. She gained her NPQH in 2006.

Elms Bank has gained two specialisms in the Arts and Applied Learning and became a Teaching School and National Support School in 2014 as part of a multiple Teaching School Alliance with Christ Church Primary School, Walshaw. Elaine has worked with key partners to establish Bury Secondary Learning Collaborative. She has been the interim headteacher of a hospital school and has supported a number of schools with a particular focus on SEND. Elaine is also a designated Pupil Premium Reviewer.

Catherine Dent

Catherine Dent

Assistant Head Teacher Elms Bank/ BTSA

Catherine is Assistant Headteacher at Elms Bank School and Special Leader of Education (SLE) for Bury Teaching School Alliance. She has worked at Elms Bank for 13 years and has vast experience of working with young people with SEND. She has taken on a number of roles at Elms Bank including the responsibility of Teaching and Learning, Continuing Professional Developing and the Induction of NQTs. As a trained music teacher, Catherine has a huge enthusiasm for singing and leads the Elms Bank student and staff choirs.

For the last three years, Catherine has led the secondary element of the teaching school. This includes overseeing the Bury Secondary Learning Collaborative (BSLC), Secondary NQT programme and the NPQML and NPQSL. She thoroughly enjoys working alongside colleagues across Bury providing opportunities for quality professional developed. 

Catherine works alongside Julie Wantling to run the BTSA Secondary PGCE Schools Direct programme. She enjoys working alongside student teachers, providing training and supporting them on their journey to Qualified Teacher Status. Catherine and Julie have created a first rate provision which has an excellent reputation across Bury with many students taking jobs in local Secondary Schools.

Sarah Howard

Sarah Howard

Primary Lead BTSA PGCE School Direct Programme

Sarah Howard is the Head Teacher at Christ Church CE Primary School. She has worked in primary education since 1987, starting her career in a Manchester primary school. She moved to Helmshore CP School to be Head of KS2 in 1992, before opting for part-time teaching at Christ Church CE Primary, Bury whilst raising her family. After resuming a full time post, Sarah progressed from Head of KS2, to Assistant Head and achieved the post of Deputy Head in April 2013. She assumed the role of Head of School on a number of occasions, more permanently from September 2018. She is very proud of the achievements of the pupils and staff, and that Christ Church is a Teaching School, sharing expertise and support across the Borough.

 In 2016, Sarah became the Lead for the BTSA Primary PGCE School Direct programme, which is proving to be very successful in training and placing students within our excellent Alliance schools. She really enjoys working alongside the student teachers, providing training and organising CPD and placements. As the School Direct PGCE has developed year by year, Sarah finds immense satisfaction, pride and delight in engaging with students who now work in Bury schools as successful teachers.

 

Julie Wantling

Secondary Lead BTSA PGCE School Direct Programme

Julie began her career teaching post-16 Art and Design students in Rochdale and Bolton, before moving to Hulton High School, Salford in 1983. Her organisational abilities led to her success as a Course Director for Art and Design at Parrenthorn High School in 1990, where her evident managerial qualities were acknowledged when she took charge of Careers Education and Guidance.

Later employed as Associate Assistant Headteacher, Julie took on multiple leadership roles as Induction Tutor for NQTs and new staff, Professional Mentor for PGCE students, Performance Management of staff and pastoral support to a Year Team, whilst still retaining her teaching timetable. During her final year of full-time teaching she was influential in creating the Schools Direct PGCE programme for Bury Teaching Schools Alliance, based on her successful experience as a Professional Mentor at Parrenthorn High School in association with several training providers such as Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Manchester, Edge Hill, Teaching Alliances and SCITTS.

Since retiring from full time teaching in 2016, Julie has enjoyed putting her skills and years of valuable experience to good use by becoming the Secondary Programme Lead for Schools Direct PGCE Students for Bury Teaching Schools Alliance.  She is committed to covering all subject areas within this role and has taken pride and pleasure in being successfully involved with recruitment, school support, Continual Professional Development, mentoring, observations, feedback and liaison with MMU.

Lynsey Silcock

Lynsey Silcock

Bury Teaching Schools Alliance Administrator

Lynsey Silcock is an Administrator for Bury Teaching Schools Alliance. Within her role, she is responsible for the administration of School Direct and NQT students, events and BSLC Projects. Lynsey has previous experience working for a Training Provider in both recruitment and the delivery of Study Programmes. She has gained knowledge of teaching qualifications and delivery in her role and is keen to provide students with support when needed.

Victoria Wulff is an Administrator for Bury Teaching Schools Alliance. Within her role, she is responsible for the administration of the NQT Pool, Bury Governor Development Courses and the Appropriate Body.

Clair Dodd is the Teaching School Manager for Bury Teaching Schools Alliance. Within her role she is responsible for finance and overseeing the department. Clair has significant experience of working within a busy school office and prior to that was a Risk Manager for a Corporate Bank.
